blog against sexism

Today is the 8th of march and by the way it’s the international women’s
day. Through decades of emancipation and fightings for liberation it would appear that equality is nearer then ever. In many countries women are permitted vote, free to work and officially gain the same privileges as men in nearly every contexts.

However there is still something so wrong. It is the fact that still women do not fill management positions. It is the fact that women do not achieve high roles in politics. Or perhaps to give an other example in the streetart and graffiti scene… But why is that? Where are the females? Weren‘t the past decades enough to get rid of the millennia of repression by patriarchal structures? spaceDo the reasons for the male domination of this scene even lie in patriarchy at all? Maybe? Maybe not?

Maybe these patriarchal structures are by far deeper as that they can be discreated by some speeches of equality and a couple of amendments. Maybe these structures pervade more spheres then we imagine. cute girlMaybe society still provides and demands definite gender performances. It is the way education tells us to take a lot of space, for example while playing football – or to take few by playing with puppets and being advised not to go out because of the bad guys out there. To be strong and brave or to be cute and beloved. This is not far away from the traditional way of differentiation. Men are associated with the public space, while women are associated within the private sphere… in other words: The woman’s place is the kitchen.
Maybe… No, I am sure that the male domination of the scene is linked to gender roles. Binary gendered society has linked us all to the idea that we have to „fit in“. Be a girl, be a boy, be a man or be a woman. Oh… and by the way, definitely be straight..
Officially we‘ve all got the same social rights. Even if you are female or camp. But reality is you‘re far away from being taken seriously if as female you do ‚men’s stuff‘. The way out from being labelled as a ‚whore‘, ‚bitch‘ or whatever to an respectable writer, djane etc. is so fucked up that I guess most women don‘t even have the drive to get through this – and I can‘t blame them for that!

I think it’s our all business to reflect on our selves, our social position and challenge our gender role play..

This is not just the day of women’s liberation, this is and should be
the day of our gender liberation!
